Finding Safety to Heal: The Gut-Brain Connection and Releasing Trapped Emotions
In this deeply personal episode of Intentionally Rooted in Healing, I share the next chapter of my journey—how I began to heal from autoimmunity by addressing the profound connection between the gut-brain axis and unresolved trauma.
Through gut-focused support and trapped emotion release therapy, I discovered the tools that helped me calm my overactive immune system, reduce inflammation, and finally feel safe enough to heal. I’ll explore the transformative power of nurturing the gut, which acts as a bridge between our physical and emotional health, and how releasing long-held grief and stress allowed my body to shift out of fight-or-flight mode.
If you’ve ever felt stuck in your healing journey or wondered how emotions and physical health are connected, this episode will inspire and empower you to start peeling back the layers of illness and create a foundation for true wellness.
Tune in to learn how finding safety—both in the body and the mind—is the key to unlocking your healing potential.
Hi, and welcome to Intentionally Rooted in Healing. I’m Tiffanie, your guide on this journey of uncovering the deep connections between our emotions, traumas, and physical health. If this is your first time tuning in, thank you for being here. You’re stepping into a safe and empowering space to explore the intricate dance between the mind, body, and spirit.
Today, I want to take you on a very personal journey—my journey. It’s the foundation of why I’m here speaking with you today and why I’m so passionate about this work. I’ll be sharing how autoimmunity manifested in my body, the symptoms that took over my life, the years of medical gaslighting I endured, and, ultimately, the profound realization that changed everything for me: how the trauma of losing my father played a significant role in the manifestation of disease in my body.
Let me start by painting the picture. A few years ago, my life looked drastically different. Physically, I was barely holding on. My days were consumed by debilitating symptoms: extreme fatigue, brain fog so thick it felt like I was underwater, joint pain that made even small tasks unbearable, and at one point, I couldn’t walk a block without collapsing or passing out. I felt trapped inside a body that seemed to be attacking itself.
I saw doctor after doctor. Some said it was all in my head. Others dismissed me with vague labels like "stress-induced" or "You are a mom and you just need more rest." No one could give me clear answers. For over a decade, I lived in this limbo of not being heard, not being believed, and not having the tools I needed to heal.
It was gaslighting in its truest form, and it left me questioning myself, my body, and my sanity.
But then, everything began to shift when I started looking inward. I began to ask myself hard questions. Why was my body reacting this way? Could there be a deeper cause beyond the physical symptoms? And that’s when I began to connect the dots.
You see, the tipping point for me was losing my father. It was a trauma I didn’t fully process. I carried it silently, burying my grief deep inside while life demanded I move on. But trauma doesn’t just disappear—it stores itself in the body. It creates patterns of stress, dysregulation, and inflammation.
I began to realize that my autoimmunity wasn’t just physical; it was a manifestation of unresolved emotional wounds. My body was crying out in ways I couldn’t ignore, forcing me to pay attention to what I had been pushing down for so long.
Through holistic healing, I started to unpack the connection between my symptoms and my past. I learned how trauma dysregulates the nervous system and how chronic stress creates inflammation—the perfect storm for autoimmunity to take root. And when I began addressing my trauma—not just treating the symptoms—I started to heal.
Today, I’m standing here, sharing this with you, because I know I’m not alone in this. So many of us live with chronic illnesses that seem to come out of nowhere. But what if we shift the question? Instead of “Why is my body betraying me?” we ask, “What is my body trying to tell me?”
In this episode, we’re diving deep into that idea. I’ll share more about how I made these connections, the tools I used to start my healing journey, and how understanding the mind-body connection can empower you to reclaim your health.
Before we dive in, I want to leave you with this thought: Your body is not broken. It’s communicating with you. And when we listen, we can uncover the keys to healing.
So, there I was—standing at this crossroads. I had finally connected the dots between my unresolved trauma and the autoimmunity that had taken over my body. But knowing the root cause was just the beginning. The real question was, “How do I start to heal?”
The first step for me was realizing that healing couldn’t just come from addressing the physical symptoms. I had spent years treating only the surface—the pain, the fatigue, the brain fog. But if trauma had disrupted my body’s systems at such a deep level, I needed to work just as deeply to restore balance.
That’s when I discovered the power of the gut-brain axis. For years, I had ignored the role my gut played in my health. I had no idea that the gut is not only responsible for digestion but also serves as a control center for the immune system, hormones, and even mental health.
I started incorporating gut-brain axis-focused support. This meant introducing specific supplements, functional foods, and lifestyle changes that targeted the gut lining, reduced inflammation, and supported healthy gut bacteria. I learned that the gut produces most of the body’s serotonin and communicates directly with the brain through the vagus nerve. By nurturing my gut, I wasn’t just improving digestion—I was creating a foundation for emotional resilience and immune regulation.
Almost immediately, I noticed a shift. My body began to feel more grounded, less reactive. The fog that clouded my thoughts started to lift. It was like my nervous system, which had been stuck in fight-or-flight mode for years, was finally getting the message that it was safe to stand down.
But addressing the gut-brain connection was only one part of the puzzle. The next step was tackling the emotional baggage that I had buried so deeply. That’s when I began exploring trapped emotion release therapy.
Now, let me tell you—this work was profound. Trapped emotions are like invisible anchors, weighing us down without us even realizing it. They create energetic blockages that can disrupt the body’s natural healing processes. By releasing these emotions, I wasn’t just working on my mental health; I was freeing my body from patterns of stress and inflammation that were fueling my autoimmune symptoms.
Through this therapy, I started identifying and releasing emotions tied to specific events, including the trauma of losing my father. I realized how much grief I had stored in my body—grief that had been screaming for attention through physical symptoms. As I released these emotions, I felt lighter, freer, and, for the first time in years, hopeful.
The combination of gut-brain axis support and trapped emotion release therapy was like flipping a switch for me. Together, they helped me not only address the physical manifestations of my autoimmunity but also start feeling safe enough to heal. And that’s something I want to emphasize: Safety is critical for healing.
When we’re stuck in a state of stress—whether from unresolved trauma, a dysregulated gut, or chronic illness—our bodies don’t feel safe enough to repair. Healing requires calm, trust, and a sense of security. The gut-brain axis work and emotion release therapy gave me the tools to create that safety within myself.
I’m sharing all of this because I want you to know that healing is possible. No matter how long you’ve been stuck in a cycle of illness or how deeply rooted your symptoms feel, there are pathways to reclaiming your health. It’s not always easy, and it’s not always linear, but when you begin to peel back the layers—starting with the gut, the nervous system, and the emotions—you can create the conditions for your body to thrive again.
In the next episode, we’ll dive deeper into the specific tools and practices I used to support my gut-brain health and release trapped emotions. I’ll share actionable steps you can take to start your own journey and create a foundation for healing, no matter where you are right now.
Until then, I encourage you to reflect on this: What is your body trying to tell you? What emotions or experiences might still be holding you back? And what steps can you take to start creating safety and balance in your life?
